The proper rated outdoor ceiling fan will last for years, and be a lasting investment. Outdoor ceiling fans are divided into two groups: damp rated outdoor fans and wet rated outdoor fans. Damp Rated outdoor ceiling fans can be used outdoors, but they must be installed under a solid roof. In other words, they cannot be exposed to water directly; they are ideal for covered outdoor areas. Wet rated outdoor fans can be directly exposed to all outdoor elements and are great for almost any outdoor area. Wet rated have seals which enable the fan to withstand water.
Outdoor flush mount fans are mounted directly to the ceiling or structure with no down rod so they do not move or sway in strong winds. For flush mount outdoor ceiling fans, consider the wet rated Concept II and Traditional Concept by Minka Aire. Both fans come with remotes and light kits and only hang 11.75 inches from the ceiling.
